WHERE IS UTILA?
The resort is located on Utila, the smallest of the Bay Islands in the western Caribbean, off the northern coast of Honduras. Situated on the edge of the largest reef system in the Western Hemisphere, Utila is an unspoiled tropical island with a quaint Caribbean atmosphere and a distinct feeling of still being “undiscovered”.
It is known for its friendly people, natural beauty, excellent diving and frequent whale shark sightings.
HOW TO GET THERE
There are convenient flights from Houston (United), Atlanta (Delta), Dallas & Miami (American) and Toronto (Air Canada) to international airports on our neighbor island Roatan (RTB) or San Pedro Sula (SAP) on the mainland.
We can provide contact information for local travel providers for an island hopper flight from either airport into Utila, or a ferry from Roatan.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Utila is served by a private community clinic, with an English-speaking doctor, and is able to deal with many typical medical emergencies and dive-related issues. There is also a Hyperbaric Chamber on the island.
The island has virtually no violent crime, and aside from the occasional petty theft of unattended valuables, there is little to worry about. We always feel very safe on the island, day and night.
Formerly a British colony, Utila's culture is a unique blend of British, Honduran and Caribbean cultures. Many residents speak English, and US currency is accepted almost everywhere. There are no fast-food restaurants, tall buildings or chain stores in Utila. Most people get around by foot, bike, ATV or tuk-tuk taxi. There are lots of local restaurants and bars, and the night life is quite lively.
WHERE IS THE RESORT?
Utopia Village is located on the southwest shore of Utila island. It is just a 15 minute boat ride from Utila Town, the nearest and only town on the island. The resort was designed to blend into its natural surroundings, and is located on the beach, nestled between large trees, and just a few yards away from the ocean and a beautiful house reef.
Whale Sharks are the largest fish in the sea. Utila is known as the whale shark capitol of the Caribbean, with documented sightings in every month of the year.
HOW TO GET TO THE RESORT
Once you land in Utila, we will take care of getting you to the resort, and you can start to relax. We will pick you up at the airport or ferry dock, and take you to town where one of our boats will be waiting for you to take you to the resort - a short 15-20 minute trip.
